Stalemate leaves Addicks in bottom three

Charlton made it 10 games without a win after being held to a goalless draw at home to Southampton. The home side were indebted to goalkeeper Nicky Weaver in the second half as they withstood a Southampton barrage to earn a point. The point sees Charlton remain in the bottom three, while Southampton climb one spot to 19th. With caretaker manager Phil Parkinson taking charge of the Addicks for the first time at the Valley, Charlton looked lively in the opening 45 minutes. It was a completely different story in the second half as Southampton laid siege to the Charlton goalmouth and Weaver did well to keep out David McGoldrick's effort before making a superb double save with only minutes remaining to earn his side a draw. The home side came flying out of the traps and should have been in front in the opening minute when Hameur Bouazza's free-kick found Mark Hudson unmarked at the far post but he sent his shot well wide. Keith Gillespie then sent another shot wide before his corner fell to Bouazza and his effort was turned smartly round the post by Davis.

Press

Charlton continued to press for an opening goal and Bouazza neatly flicked the ball up before volleying over from 25 yards. Southampton did eventually find their rhythm and Bradley Wright-Phillips drove just wide from the edge of the box after latching onto a poor clearance from Hudson. With half time approaching, Deon Burton played Bouazza in for a one-one-one with Kelvin Davis, but the Saints keeper was quick off his line and turned the shot around the post. Southampton were much improved at the start of the second half and Andrew Surman glanced a header wide from Lloyd James' cross before Wright-Phillips shot wide. Charlton keeper Weaver barely had anything to do in the opening 45 minutes but he did superbly to stop McGoldrick's close-range shot with his feet.
Dominating
The Saints were dominating and Wright-Phillips should have given them the lead when he was put through by Adam Lallana with 11 minutes remaining but he took the shot too early and Weaver saved easily. With only four minutes remaining, Weaver came to Charlton's rescue with a double save as he parried out McGoldrick's 20-yard effort before denying Matthew Paterson on the rebound.
