A solitary strike from Joe Garner was enough to see Nottingham Forest secure a 1-0 win against Barnsley.

The Reds have clambered off the foot of the Championship table in the wake of the much-needed success, while the result will also help to ease the pressure on under-fire boss Colin Calderwood.

The winning goal at the City Ground arrived after 36 minutes, with Garner able to muscle his way between two Tykes defenders and head home Nathan Tyson's left-wing cross.

Jon Macken should have silenced the Forest fans, who were goading him for his connections with the Reds' East Midlands rivals Derby, by converting a similar chance midway through the first half.

But the former Rams striker headed wide when found by Jamal Campbell-Ryce's pinpoint delivery from the right.

Campbell-Ryce's rising right-foot shot from 25 yards that was palmed away by Lee Camp after three minutes was not a sign of things to come as both sides struggled to retain possession and lacked creativity in an untidy first half.

Lewis McGugan curled a free-kick over the crossbar from the right-hand side of the box in the 10th minute, while Robert Earnshaw flashed a low shot wide soon after Macken's glaring miss.

The second half was a much better spectacle and as the mist began to roll in from the River Trent between the gaps in the stands, it was Forest that threatened to disappear out of sight.

Mazy

Calderwood's side created a host of chances to stretch their lead before the hour mark.

McGugan's mazy run and cut-back from the byline culminated in Earnshaw's goalbound shot being blocked.

McGugan then cut inside from the left wing and unleashed a swerving right foot shot from 25 yards that clipped the top of the crossbar.

Barnsley keeper Heinz Muller was also called upon to push Joel Lynch's dipping shot over the crossbar.

In between, the Tykes reminded Forest that they were still a threat on the break when Camp had to get down quickly to tip Anderson De Silva's shot from the edge of the area round a post.

Barnsley put their hosts under pressure in the final 10 minutes and twice came close to snatching an equalising goal in injury time.

Stephen Foster headed against the crossbar before De Silva's 30-yard free-kick through a crowded penalty area was clawed away by Camp at the last moment.
