Brooker: Equaliser off the bench

Doncaster have slipped to the foot of the Championship table despite battling back from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw at Watford.

The teams were evenly-matched at Vicarage Road but it was the home side who forged ahead on 31 minutes through Tommy Smith.

The Hornets retained that lead until 20 minutes from the full-time whistle before on-loan Steve Brooker levelled matters on his debut for Rovers.

Only Nottingham Forest were below Sean O'Driscoll's men before kick-off but they started well and had the first sight of goal in the eighth minute.

Brian Stock sent in a swirling corner from the right and John Spicer met it well but sent his rising drive just over.

Dearth of action

There was a dearth of action for the rest of the half until Smith struck in the 31st minute.

Tamas Priskin played a clever one-two with Will Hoskins down the right flank and squared the ball across the 18-yard line to where Smith was darting in from the left.

The former Derby man produced a confident finish, stroking home left-footed to give Neil Sullivan no chance in the Doncaster goal.

Doncaster's on-loan West Brom defender Shelton Martis was then forced off with an injury to be replaced by Sam Hird before Gareth Taylor went close for the visitors.

Taylor sent in a powerful header from James O'Connor's cross but Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach made a comfortable save.

Flurry of corners

The visitors forced a flurry of corners at the start of the second period but were unable to call Loach into action as they illustrated why they had scored just eight goals all season.

O'Driscoll sent on Lewis Guy and Brooker in an attempt to find a goal and the Bristol City striker duly obliged in the 70th minute.

Richie Wellens played the ball down the line for Spicer on the right wing and he arrowed in a fine cross. Brooker got ahead of Jay DeMerit to guide a left-footed volley past Loach with his first touch into the bottom corner from inside the six-yard box.

Watford substitute John-Joe O'Toole headed powerfully at Sullivan but it was the visitors who came closest to stealing the win five minutes from time.

Midfielder James Coppinger hit a fine strike from 25 yards but Loach watched it all the way to tip the ball around the post.
