Spot-on: Spring celebrates penalty

Spot-on: Spring celebrates penalty

Luton leapfrogged Northampton in the table with an entertaining 4-1 win at Kenilworth Road.

Goals from Darren Currie, Paul Furlong and two Matt Spring penalties were enough to give Kevin Blackwell's side the points with Bradley Johnson finding the net for Northampton.

Luton got off to flying start when Currie fired in front after just four minutes with a superb curling effort from the edge of the box.

Northampton drew level on 23 minutes when Johnson smashed an unstoppable shot from long-range past Dean Brill.

Furlong missed a glorious chance to restore Luton's lead just before the break when he somehow lifted his shot over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Johnson turned from hero to villain for Northampton four minutes after the break when he conceded a penalty for handball.

Spring took responsibility from the spot sending Mark Bunn the wrong way to restore Luton's lead.

Luton added a third just past the hour mark when Furlong got the slightest of touches to Currie's in-swinging free to divert the ball past Bunn.

The home side won another penalty in the final minute when Mark Hughes hauled down Furlong inside the box.

Spring took the penalty and although Bunn got his hands to Spring's effort the ball spun into the net to complete a miserable night for Northampton.
