Horror injury overshadows great game

A ninety-ninth minute winner from Blackpool striker Ben Burgess gave the home side a 2-1 win over Hull, in a hugely entertaining Championship clash which was overshadowed by a serious injury to Caleb Folan.

The powerful forward was making his Hull bow following a £1million switch from Wigan and prior to his injury he was the game's outstanding performer.

Folan's debut soured, though, in the second half when after a sickening clash of heads with Blackpool defender Kaspars Gorkss, who also went off injured, he was left unconscious as the game was held-up for ten minutes.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher had put the home side in front just a minute into the second half, after an error from Andy Dawson, but Ian Ashbee's smart finish levelled matters just three minutes later, with Burgess to have the final say in injury time.

One bustling Folan run early on ended with a cross which Shaun Barker had to hack behind, and from the resulting corner, Paul Rachubka kept out Richard Garcia's shot.

Folan's deflected effort from a narrow angle was blocked by Rachubka, before Dean Marney fired just over from the edge of the area.

But the home side had a great chance with virtually the last kick of the first- half, as Gorkss fired over from 18 yards when he ought to have hit the target.

Deadlock broken

But the deadlock was broken a minute after the break when Andy Dawson made a hash of attempting to clear Keigan Parker's cross and Taylor-Fletcher was left with a simple left-footed finish from five yards out.

However, the Tigers were back level within three minutes when a long ball was headed on by Stuart Elliott and Folan cleverly left the ball, which fell perfectly for Ashbee to rifle home.

Windass played in Elliott, but Rachubka kept his shot out with his feet, and then made a simple save to deny Marney's goalbound header, before Duke made a similar save from a Gorkss header at the other end.

Folan's injury meant there were an incredible 11 minutes of stoppage-time, and Shaun Barker's header was well saved by Duke as Blackpool pushed for a winner.

And that winner came courtesy of former Hull man Burgess, who climbed above Dawson at the back post to smack home a header off the post from Parker's cross.
