Portsmouth outclassed previously unbeaten Leeds 3-0 at Fratton Park to take their place in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Two goals from Noe Pamarot and a first Pompey goal for David Nugent gave the Premier League side a victory they fully deserved.

Dennis Wise's side gave a good account of themselves and for long periods made Pompey look decidedly ordinary, but in the end were swept aside by their hosts.

Niko Kranjcar went close for the home side inside the opening ten minutes when his right-foot effort somehow stayed out after hitting the woodwork.

But Leeds hit back and Tresor Kandol and former Southampton midfielder David Prutton had great chances to put the League One side ahead.

Harry Redknapp's men did take a 43rd minute when Pedro Mendes' low shot was deflected beyond Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren by the fortunate Pamarot.

Jermaine Beckford replaced Kandol at the start of the second half and almost levelled with virtually his first touch, but Jamie Ashdown saved smartly to deny the Leeds striker.

Nugent had already missed a similar opportunity after Ankergren spilled a Djimi Traore shot but he was to make amends with a clean finish from John Utaka's cross and run just six minutes from time.

By then Pamarot had put the result beyond doubt with a firm header from

substitute Gary O'Neil's corner in the 80th minute as the home side ran out comfortable winners.
