Sheffield Wednesday overcame Yorkshire rivals Rotherham 3-1 to reach the second round of the Carling Cup.

Second half goals from former Rotherham ace Deon Burton and Wade Small helped Brian Laws' side to a hard-fought victory.

Rotherham threatened an upset when Danny Harrison fired them in front, only for Glenn Whelan to equalise right on the stroke of half-time.

Wednesday proved their class in the second half as they ended brave Rotherham's resistance.

Rotherham broke the deadlock on 33 minutes when Stephen Brogan flighted a deep free-kick to the far post and Derek Holmes teed the ball up for Harrison to drill the ball home.

Wednesday lost Marcus Tudgay to injury shortly before the break but were level on the stroke of half-time when Whelan collected possession 25 yards from goal and thrashed a deflected low drive past Warrington.

The visitors grabbed the lead four minutes after the break when Andy Warrington failed to hold Small's low strike and Burton swept in the rebound from eight yards.

Small then added the coup de grace when his intended cross flew over Warrington and nestled into the top corner to confirm Wednesday's second-round spot.
