Ferguson: Goal hero
Rangers got their SPL title bid off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Inverness.
Goals from Barry Ferguson (2) and Nacho Novo were enough to give Walter Smith's side the victory in the opening game of the new season.
Rangers started the game the brighter of the two sides and could have broken the deadlock after just four minutes when Ferguson sent DaMarcus Beasley clear on goal, but Inverness goalkeeper Mark Fraser forced the American wide and the chance had gone.
StunningThe visitors made the breakthrough on 16 minutes with a stunning goal from captain Ferguson.
Lee McCulloch headed Allan McGregor's long punt upfield into the path of Ferguson who smashed a superb left-footed volley in off the post past Fraser from the edge of the box.
Rangers were inches away from doubling their lead just past the half hour mark when Boyd raced clear onto Ferguson's through ball and he was unlucky to see his shot diverted onto the crossbar off the foot of Fraser.
Beasley wasted another good opening four minutes before half-time when he burst clear only to shoot weakly straight at Fraser.
Rangers continued to look the more likely side to score and Fraser had to be alert to turn Carlos Cuellar's shot round the post right on the stroke of half-time.
ClinicalNovo doubled Rangers' lead on 64 minutes when McCulloch teed him up just inside the box and the little Spaniard drilled his shot beyond Fraser.
Inverness tried to rally late on, but they rarely troubled McGregor in the Rangers goal.
Ferguson wrapped up the win in the final minute with his second goal of the game capitalising on Ross Tokely's poor backpass to lob the ball over Fraser.
