Sleeping Saints punished

Cardiff hit two goals inside the opening 10 minutes to consign Southampton to a 2-1 defeat at Ninian Park.

The Saints offered little in a match that was effectively put beyond them by strikes from Joe Ledley and Cameron Jerome and the loss is the club's third in succession since George Burley took charge at St Mary's.

Jerome served notice of his side's intent when he saw a shot deflected wide but the frontman then combined with Jason Koumas to lay on a chance for Ledley which the latter converted with consummate ease in the third minute.

Roles were reversed six minutes later when Ledley squared to Jerome who fired home from 12 yards to double the hosts' lead.

The Saints belatedly came to life and Dexter Blackstock reduced the arrears with a cool finish in the 25th minute.

The visitors were buoyed and finished the first half in the ascendancy. However, the second period was one way traffic in the direction of restored visiting goalkeeper Antti Niemi.

Ledley could have put the match beyond all doubt 12 minutes from time but miscued from six yards before Saints survived late penalty appeals as Koumas was upended in the box.
