Reading remain four points clear at the top of the Championship table after their 5-1 demolition of struggling Brighton & Hove Albion.

A Dave Kitson hat-trick sent The Royals on their way to their seventh straight win, as Brighton had Gary Elphick sent off just after the break for two bookable offences.

Seagulls boss Mark McGhee played a very defensive formation at The Madejski Stadium, but it did little to stop Reading from running out comfortable winners.

The Royals were gifted the lead on 27 minutes when Brighton captain Charlie Oatway turned Glen Little's byline cross into his own net for a 1-0 half-time lead.

Brighton were then reduced to ten men when Elphick was sent off for a second yellow card after a foul on Kitson.

Kitson then scored his first goal when he converted a penalty on 51 minutes after Gary Hart had fouled him in the Brighton box.

He then scored his second with a header from Nicky Shorey's deflected shot before Stephen Hunt made it four when he turned home Shorey's cross.

Brighton got a stunning consolation after Colin Kazim-Richards struck home a 30-yard effort, but Kitson made sure of his second half hat-trick with a third goal in injury time for an emphatic 5-1 result.
