Hull earned a vital three points at The KC Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff.

The game hinged on the dismissal of Bluebirds captain Darren Purse in the second half, after the struggling Tigers had been on the back foot for much of the game.

Cardiff, who will be seeking a place in the play-offs this season, started brightly and could have taken the lead when Jason Koumas' fierce strike was only just kept out by Matt Duke's fingertip save.

Koumas again came close on the hour mark, Duke this time saving from a free kick.

The game turned shortly after, with Purse shown a second yellow card for a foul on Craig Fagan.

Just two minutes later Billy Paynter opened the scoring, coolly knocking home Fagan's excellent cross (70).

The lively Fagan added some late gloss to the scoreline, placing his shot into the corner of the net from eight yards out (87).
