Harry Redknapp may have departed, but things carried on as normal on the pitch as Southampton were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at St Mary's.

The Saints have been unconvincing all season and this, their 13th draw in 21 league matches, left them adrift in 12th place, 21 points short of the promotion places.

Danny Higginbotham's penalty had given the home side, led by Dave Bassett, a half time lead, but Ade Akinbiyi's 11th league goal of the season sent The Clarets home with a point.

Southampton started brightly as their supporters celebrated Redknapp's departure, with Kamil Kosowski testing Burnley keeper Brian Jensen three minutes in.

Brett Ormerod shot wide a minute later, before Burnley responded only to see Antti Niemi save at John Spicer's feet.

Southampton took the lead from the spot after Micah Hyde brought down Rory Delap, with Higginbotham beating Jensen with a confident strike.

However, the home side could not maintain the momentum and Burnley levelled when Graham Branch's fine cross was headed in by Akinbiyi.

The former Leicester striker was then only inches away from a winner for Steve Cotterill's side in stoppage time.
