Juventus gained revenge for their defeat a fortnight ago by beating Bayern Munich 2-1 at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The Italian club, playing their 100th UEFA Champions League game, moved top of Group A after a David Trezeguet brace saw off Bayern in an encounter of the highest quality.

In a bright start to the game play stretched from end to end as both sides came flying out of the blocks.

Bayern nearly opened the scoring in the first five minutes, an inswinging free kick from Sebastian Deisler causing problems in the Juve penalty area, and the returning Christian Abbiati had to be alert to tip over Fabio Cannavaro's misdirected header as he attempted to clear.

From the resulting corner Juventus launched a fast counter-attack, culminating in a fierce Trezeguet strike which was beaten away by Oliver Kahn.

Both teams looked shaky in defence early on, and the home side were nearly punished when Roy Makaay benefited from a lucky break and was gifted a golden opportunity, but the out-of-form striker pulled his shot wide from just inside the box.

Moments later Trezeguet missed an even better chance at the other end, firing wide from six yards out after great work from Gianluca Zambrotta, who did well to keep the ball in play before producing an inviting low cross.

As the game settled down chances started to thin out, and it was left to the midfielders to jostle for control.

Juventus showed glimpses of the form that has taken them top of Serie A, but lacked the final ball, while Bayern looked assured in possession and comfortably soaked up their opponents' pressure.

The German side always looked dangerous from set pieces, and threatened just before half time when Deisler's free kick was met by Claudio Pizarro's bullet header, but it flew a foot over the bar.

Juventus were unfortunate to see a penalty appeal waved away after a shove on Zambrotta, as the sides went into the break all square.

The interval seemed to revitalise Bayern, who almost caught Juventus cold seconds after the restart when Makaay failed to connect properly with a left wing cross.

Fabio Capello introduced Pavel Nedved for the home side, and the Czech star immediately started to pull the strings.

The tricky midfielder created a chance for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the Swede's powerful shot was blocked by some brave Bayern defending.

Juventus began to play more positively, and were rewarded with a fine goal after 62 minutes.

The skilful Ibrahimovic played a clever pass to Nedved, who was brought down in the area. A penalty would surely have been awarded, but Trezeguet seized on Bayern's hesitation and smashed the ball past the helpless Kahn into the corner (61).

Bayern's reply was instant. Deisler curled a delightful free kick into the box from 35 yards out and it went straight in after neither attackers nor defenders managed to make contact (66).

The game continued to see-saw, with both sides trying their luck from distance without success.

With both sides likely to make it through the group, there was little riding on the game as it entered the final ten minutes, but Juventus showed the greater urgency.

Trezeguet restored the home side's lead after 84 minutes, neatly controlling Patrick Vieira's chip over the defence with his chest, before turning and striking in one fluid movement, the ball finding the bottom corner of the net.

Juve, who saw Ibrahimovic red carded in the final minutes, held on for a victory that was a tad cruel on Bayern, but on the evidence of this game both clubs should fancy their chances in this competition.
