Chris Dagnall fired a hat-trick as Rochdale secured their fourth win of the season by demolishing Chester City 6-1 at Spotland.

Dagnall, who has struggled for form this season, leapt in to life after 12 minutes when he curled a terrific shot beyond John Danby's despairing dive.

Chester were reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute following Glen Rule's late challenge on Joe Thompson and the hosts capitalised as Dagnall held off Paul Linwood to drill home his second.

Chester briefly threatened to come back into the match when Kevin Ellison forced a good save from Sam Russell just before the interval and their hopes were further lifted when Rory McArdle diverted Ryan Lowe's freekick into his own net early in the second-half.

But Dagnall completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute and after that it was game over for the visitors.

Thompson's header was deflected into the net by Lee Thorpe for Rochdale's fourth and substitute Adam Le Fondre beat Chester's offside trap to poke home the fifth. Will Buckley rounded off the scoring when he tapped home Le Fondre's cross for number six.
