Reading cut Sheffield United's lead at the top of the Championship table to just three points after defeating Stoke 1-0 at the Brittannia Stadium.

Dave Kitson's second-half penalty was enough to seal the win in a game which was dominated by Steve Coppell's men from start to finish.

Kitson nailed the 76th minute penalty after he was brought down in the box by Lewis Buxton.

Royals striker Kevin Doyle (pictured) - a former Stoke transfer target - looked lively throughout and he had a good chance to open the scoring following good work from James Harper.

Stoke struggled to create chances, with Paul Gallagher looking to be their most likely source of any joy.

As the clock wound down, Sam Bangoura saw his shot saved by Marcus Hahnemann, but Reading continued to look threatening on the counter.
