Brynjar Gunnarsson scored twice as Reading won 2-1 in the top-of-the-table clash at The Madejski Stadium to halve Sheffield United's lead.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Gunnarsson headed past Paddy Kenny a minute from time.

Reading started the stronger, setting a furious pace from the outset, and were rewarded with a goal in the third minute.

Glen Little picked out the unmarked Gunnarsson with a corner, and the forward volleyed home from 15 yards.

The Blades had not won 10 games out of 11 without reason though, and forced their way back into the game, creating chance after chance.

An equaliser arrived on the quarter hour mark. After great work down the right, Paul Ifill swung in a deep cross, and Alan Quinn rose to nod it back across goal. Steve Kabba flung himself forward to head past Marcus Hahnemann from close range.

The visitors looked to be gaining the upper hand, but were lucky not to lose goalkeeper Kenny after he seemed to handle outside the area in order to prevent an own goal.

The game continued to ebb and flow after the break, even though the teams could not sustain the frantic pace of the first half, until Gunnarsson's header after 89 minutes.
