Charlton survived a Carling Cup shock at home against Hartlepool as they came from a goal down to win 3-1.

Alan Curbishley made wholesale changes to his side and seven players got their first starts of the season at The Valley, and the result was a disappointing first half display.

It was no surprise when Hartlepool took the lead five minutes from half time when Darren Williams fed Jon Daly, who turned and shot past Thomas Myhre.

The Premiership outfit had a stroke of fortune to thank for the equaliser when they were awarded a penalty two minutes before half time, and Jonatan Johansson tucked the spot kick away.

Curbishley responded to The Addicks' poor display by bringing on Darren Bent after the interval, and the young marksman eventually did the trick as he put the hosts in front on 73 minutes to break Pools' stubborn resistance.

Fellow substitute Jay Bothroyd fired in a free kick ten minutes before the end to secure Charlton's passage into the next round, although they made hard work of it against Hartlepool.
