Gillingham knocked Portsmouth out of the Carling Cup after a 3-2 extra-time success.

Andrew Crofts netted the crucial goal in extra time to dump out Alain Perrin's men.

Things looked to be going smoothly for Pompey when Gary O'Neil fired them in front on 24 minutes.

Darren Byfield drew Gillingham level three minutes before the break with a long-range strike.

Portsmouth restored their lead three minutes after the break when Matt Taylor converted from the penalty spot after he himself was felled in the box.

Gillingham refused to lie down and drew level again in somewhat fortuitous circumstances with an unfortunate own goal from Jamie Ashdown.

Byfield again tried his luck from distance and his shot hit the post before rebounding off the back of Ashdown and into the net.

Portsmouth substitute Svetoslav Todorov spurned the chance to win the game for the visitors in normal time when he missed from the spot six minutes from the end meaning the game was forced into extra time.

Gillingham grabbed the winner four minutes into extra time with Crofts scoring from close-range.

Portsmouth threw everything forward in a bid to rescue themselves, but they could not find a way past a resolute Gills defence as the League One side held on for a morale-boosting victory.
