Sunderland's season lurched into gear, but they needed extra time to see off plucky Cheltenham.

The Black Cats are still searching for their first win of the season in The Premiership and manager Mick McCarthy was hoping for a confidence boost in the Carling Cup.

John Ward's Cheltenham were in no mood to oblige and they were only undone by Anthony Le Tallec's effort in extra time.

Sunderland failed to find a route to goal in normal time, as the League Two side battled manfully to force extra time.

The home side entered the extra 30 minutes a man down, as Dan Smith saw red for two cautions, but they found a way to goal on 92 minutes.

Liam Lawrence deserves great credit for digging out a cross and Le Tallec eased the pressure when making no mistake with a half-volley at the far post.

Sunderland were pushed back in the latter stages and only fine handling from Ben Alnwick in the dying moments prevented Damien Spencer from forcing a penalty shoot-out.
