Bayern survive Vienna scare

Paolo Guerrero's winner on the hour was enough to give Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Rapid Vienna in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.
However, the Germans were grateful for the three points after surviving a late missed penalty from Josef Valachovic which sent a frenzied Ernst Happel stadium crowd home disappointed.
The first chance of the evening arrived at the head of Bayern defender Lucio but his attempt flashed wide of the upright.
Despite that early scare Rapid were not slow to take the initiative and captain Steffen Hofman found Ivan Ivanschitz who turned inside Valerien Ismael but dragged his effort wide of Oliver Kahn's right hand post.
In the 20th minute a forceful run from England's Owen Hargreaves presented Roy Makaay with a shooting opportunity but his well-struck effort was held by Helge Payer in the Rapid goal. Claudio Pizarro then shot straight at the goalkeeper after a long ball caused confusion in the home defence.
With minutes to go before the interval the Austrians should have claimed the lead. Hofman served notice of his side's intent after he narrowly failed to get his boot on a deep cross. However that warning went unheeded by Bayern and from Axel Lawaree's cross Marek Kincl found himself with the goal at his mercy only for the striker to blaze his effort a foot over the bar.
Immediately after the restart Hofman's free-kick was tipped on to the crossbar at full stretch by Kahn with Andreas Dober's follow-up also looping on to the top of the bar.
Felix Magath's side then took the lead courtesy of substitute Guerrero's fortuitous tap-in. Lucio's cross from the left found Makaay whose firm header was parried by Payer but only to Guerrero, who had been on the pitch less than ten minutes.
The Peruvian's task was simple but his finish was far from assured, although his effort was destined to squirm in, much to Payer's despair.
Makaay's back post header was punched away by Payer before Rapid fluffed a glorious opportunity to equalise when Valachovic missed an 82nd minute penalty.
Substitute Muhammed Akagunduz drew a foul from Lucio but Valachovic placed his spot kick wide of Kahn's right hand post.
That miss deflated what had been a concerted effort from Josef Hickersberger's side and Bayern were able to leave the Austrian capital with the spoils.
