Southampton were thwarted in their efforts to climb the table after a 1-1 draw at home to Queens Park Rangers.

Harry Redknapp's men are making encouraging progress but they had to settle for a point at St Mary's after Danny Higginbotham cancelled out Danny Shittu's goal.

QPR keeper Simon Royce's agility was tested by an early Nigel Quashie free kick, after the Scotland international had passed a fitness test to play.

Chances were at a premium and The R's grabbed the lead through their first real opening on 32 minutes when Shittu headed Lee Cook's corner in at the far post.

Saints responded swiftly to the setback and, on 37 minutes, were level through Higginbotham's piledriver of a free kick.

Southampton continued to enjoy the better of things but could not muster a second goal, with Quashie, Djamel Belmadi and Kenwyne Jones all trying their luck.

Late on, QPR could have pinched a win but Marc Nygaard missed the target with his header from Stefan Moore's cross.
