Crewe Alexandra started the season in a winning vein with a 2-1 victory at home to Burnley.

David Vaughan scored a stunning late strike to give Crewe the points after Billy Jones' first half goal had been cancelled out by Gifton Noel-Williams.

The Railwaymen dominated the game in the opening 45 minutes but only had Jones' deflected effort a minute before the break to show for their control.

Prior to that, Danny Coyne made a fine save from Darren Moss, while Steve Jones tamely headed Vaughan's cross at the Burnley keeper.

The Clarets, with a threadbare squad, should have drawn level just minutes after the interval but Ade Akinbiyi headed wide from just two yards out.

Burnley debutant Garreth O'Connor had a shot saved by Ben Williams before the visitors equalised on 67 minutes when Noel-Williams marked his Clarets bow by heading home.

Crewe rallied and collected a deserved three points with a minute left on the clock when Vaughan let fly with a stinging drive from 20 yards.
