Brighton hauled themselves out of the drop zone with a 1-0 win at already relegated Rotherham.

An own goal from Paul McLaren proved to be the decisive factor as The Seagulls gave themselves a fine chance of avoiding the drop.

Brighton started the game at a rate of knots, with Dean Hammond and Leon Knight (pictured) both going close.

Rotherham steadily got a foothold in the game and John Mullins hit a volley over the bar and Paul Warne saw a shot saved by Alan Blayney.

Brighton took the lead against the run of play on 19 minutes, with McLaren heading a Richard Carpenter free kick into his own net.

Gary Hart and Chris McPhee had chances to double the lead, while Shaun Barker hit the crossbar with a header for the home side.

Warne saw a header brilliantly saved by Blayney as The Millers pressed for a leveller, while Barker saw his header cleared off the line by Charlie Oatway as Brighton held on for all three points.
