Ipswich Town's failure to beat Leeds United at Elland Road meant Sunderland clinched a spot in next season's Premiership.

The East Anglian side knew nothing less than the three points would do in West Yorkshire and they should have won the contest.

Shefki Kuqi turned Gary Kelly inside and out before firing past Neil Sullivan after 11 minutes, but the lead would not last.

With the visitors virtually celebrating Leeds struck back immediately with Matthew Spring connecting with Frazier Richardson's right wing cross.

Kevin Horlock came close to restoring Ipswich's lead before the break, but he lashed his volley over the bar.

Chances were at a premium after the interval, however Joe Royle's side should have claimed all three points from their trip up North.

Firstly Kuqi scuffed his shot wide before Darren Currie somehow fired wide of the target deep into injury time.
