Preston maintained their push for a play-off spot with a 3-0 victory over strugglers Cardiff thanks to two goals from teenager David Nugent.

The 19-year-old hit his sixth and seventh goals since his move from Bury in January and strike partner Richard Cresswell grabbed the third.

The home side began unconvincingly and Bluebirds defender Danny Gabbidon headed over a Richard Langley free-kick over from close range early on.

Nugent had the best chance for the home side in the first period but he could only fire over after Brian O'Neil had robbed Langley of possession.

Preston looked slightly livelier after the break as first Graham Alexander fired wide from distance before Nugent headed over from an Eddie Lewis cross.

Cresswell and Nugent both had efforts blocked and Chris Sedgwick saw his shot cleared off the line by Gabbidon as Cardiff's rearguard continued to hold firm.

Lewis then almost broke the deadlock just after the hour mark but Neil Alexander was equal to his thunderous shot and Cresswell was unable to hit the target with the follow-up.

But Billy Davies' side finally went ahead when Cresswell's cross fell to Nugent and the youngster crashed home his shot into the top corner.

Cresswell was again the provider after 79 minutes when he fed Nugent, who guided the ball inside the right post.

Preston added a third when Cresswell robbed Chris Barker and coolly slotted the ball inside the near post to leave Cardiff just above the drop zone in 21st place.
