A goal ten minutes from time by Gillingham's Nicky Southall denied Crewe a first win in 19 games but left both sides still in deep relegation trouble after a 1-1 draw at the Priestfield Stadium.

The former Bolton midfielder rifled a left-foot shot into the corner of the net past Clayton Ince just as it looked as if Alex were set for their first victory since New Year's Day.

Dario Gradi's side had taken the lead just seven minutes earlier when David Vaughan found the top left-hand corner with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

Crewe really should have taken the lead in the first-half.

Firstly, the lively Steve Jones cut a ball across the face of the penalty area only for Neil Sorvel to screw a golden chance wide of the right post.

And then Luke Varney thumped a 29th-minute rebound against the crossbar, when it would have been easier to score, after Jason Brown had denied the lively Jones.

Gills striker Darius Henderson was a constant threat for the home side but on three separate occasions spurned free headers only to almost steal the points in the dying seconds when he saw another header cleared off the line.

Jonathon Douglas forced Ince into a sharp save with a long-range blockbuster in the first-half and after the break, team-mate James McEveley, also on loan from Blackburn, should have done better after picking up a loose ball but he snatched at a shot from the edge of the box.

However, the closest either side had come to breaking the deadlock before Vaughan's piece of inspiration was when a deflected shot from sub Justin Cochrane hit the post and bounced to safety.
