West Ham missed the chance to move into the play-off spots after being held to a 1-1 draw by Millwall.

Marlon Harewood cancelled out Barry Hayles' early opener to earn West Ham a point at Upton Park.

The Lions stunned the hosts with the opening goal after 12 minutes with Hayles picking up a pass from Kevin Muscat and rounding James Walker before scoring from an acute angle.

Harewood should have drawn West Ham level three minutes later only to miss his header from just six yards out.

West Ham drew level on 35 minutes when Harewood superbly volleyed home Matthew Etherington's cross past Andy Marshall.

Both sides had chances to win the game in the second half with Harewood going close with an acrobatic overhead kick on the hour mark which Marshall did well to tip over the crossbar.

Jody Morris saw a deflected shot well saved by Walker on 66 minutes and although West Ham pushed forward in search of a winner they could not find a way past a resolute Millwall defence.

The draw all but ends Millwall's slim promotion hopes, while the point lifts West Ham up into seventh spot above Sheffield United on goal difference.
