Sunderland began slowly against Plymouth Argyle before running out comfortable 5-1 winners at the Stadium of Light.

The Pilgrims came into the game with confidence after their emphatic win over Brighton at the weekend and caused problems early on.

However, once Dean Whitehead broke the deadlock after 31 minutes there would be only one winner.

Julio Arca capped his return to the side with a goal before Marcus Stewart scored from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box.

The home side opted for a more conservative approach to the second half, but that did not stop Steve Caldwell adding a fourth with a back post header.

Plymouth refused to lie down and pulled one back when Scott Taylor fired home from the edge of the box to give the visiting faithful something to cheer about.

However, Sunderland had the final say and Sean Thornton capped a fire performance with his superb run and finish sealing a good performance from Mick McCarthy's side.
