Coventry City proved there is life after Peter Reid as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Crewe in the FA Cup third round.

Caretaker boss Adrian Heath will be delighted with his charges after they tore Dario Gradi's outfit apart, courtesy of a brace from Gary McSheffrey and one from Stern John.

City were always in control as a previously in-form Crewe looked forlorn without the presence of Dean Ashton - who was left out as he looks to complete a move to Norwich.

Within the half hour mark and City were ahead, when after John's stabbed effort was cleared an onrushing McSheffrey was on hand to register with his third goal of the season.

Crewe missed a glorious chance to level when Luke Varney headed wide and on the stroke of half time, were left to rue this squandered opportunity when John fired home Coventry's second.

After the break, Neil Sorvel saw a curling 25 yard effort saved by City goalkeeper Luke Steele but it was the Sky Blues who bossed proceedings after the break.

Coventry crushed their visitors in the 69th minute after McSheffrey doubled his total for the afternoon, when he converted Stephen Hughes' sumptuous pass.

Crewe's response proved tepid and it is Coventry that enter the hat for the competition's next round, thanks to a rousing display at Highfield Road.
