League One promotion contenders Luton bowed out of the FA Cup with a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Brentford.

Town were favourites to overcome their league rivals, but Brentford struck with two second half goals to book their passage in to the fourth round.

After a scrappy start, Luton came close to breaking the deadlock when Rowan Vine forced a good save from Stuart Nelson midway through the half.

Steve Howard then found the back of the net for Town, but his effort was ruled out for a foul.

Howard then came agonisingly close as he flicked on Steve Robinson's free kick, but the ball flew just inches wide.

Brentford began to come into the game in the second half and Marlon Beresford was at full stretch to save from Deon Burton.

The Bees then took the lead with 20 minutes left when highly rated Luton stopper Curtis Davies slipped which allowed Isaiah Rankin to break clear, Beresford blocked his effort - but he was helpless as Ben May passed to Chris Hargreaves to hammer home.

May then created Brentford's second just a minute from time when he turned Chris Coyne before sending Jay Tabb (pictured) clear who made no mistake as he easily beat Beresford.
