Mark Hughes returned to Wales with his Blackburn Rovers side and managed to force a replay with Cardiff City.

Rovers looked on course for a comfortable victory when they scored after only five minutes but the home side battled back to earn a 1-1 draw.

Morten Gamst Pedersen has struggled to make his mark at Ewood Park but he finished clinically when presented with his early opening. David Thompson provided as astute pass and the Norwegian, only playing because Brett Emerton fell ill, calmly clipped a neat chip over the advancing Tony Warner.

Pedersen should have doubled the advantage but shot wastefully wide while Warner did well to keep out a Paul Dickov chip.

City were unhappy with a few rugged challenges from the Premiership side but they upped the tempo and drew level when Alan Lee got his head to a Rhys Weston centre. The ball hit the woodwork before deflecting in off Brad Friedel so, technically, it may go down as an own goal against the American keeper.

Rovers handed Aaron Mokoena a debut as a substitute in place of the injured Barry Ferguson and were unlucky not to go ahead again when Dickov was denied by Warner's splendid stop.

Junichi Inamoto almost caught Friedel out with a speculative shot but there was relief at the other end when Thompson's effort was ruled out for a foul by Dickov on Warner. It seemed a harsh decision against the Premiership side.

The replay will take place on January 19 at Ewood Park.
