Bournemouth overcame a dogged Chester City to book their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

Chester battled fiercely throughout, but superior finishing from The Cherries meant they maintained their cup dreams.

The visitors went close early on with Michael Brown and Kevin Ellison both flashing shots wide, before Garreth O'Connor saw an effort saved for Bournemouth.

The home side then began to impose themselves on the game and they took the lead on the half hour.

John Spicer and O'Connor worked a one-two from a corner and the resulting goalmouth scramble was not cleared and Shaun Maher fired home from close range.

Chester pushed forward in the second half desperately looking for an equaliser and Ellison came close but he fired wide.

Stuart Drummond then came close as he rounded keeper Neil Moss, but pulled the ball for nobody and the chance was cleared.

It was all Chester, but against the run of play Bournemouth added a second just before the hour.

Warren Cummings crossed and the ball found its way to Wade Elliott - who made no mistake from close range.

Soon Chester grabbed the goal their play deserved when Ellison raced through and beat Moss with a nice finish.

Chester continued to press late on and substitute Rob Booth came close to grabbing a leveller, but it was not to be as Bournemouth progressed.
