Gills frustrate Black Cats

Sunderland missed the chance to move above Wigan into second place in The Championship as they were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Gillingham.

The Black Cats had lost two of their previous three games as their promotion bid falters and they suffered an early setback when they fell behind to Darius Henderson's goal.

Chris Brown soon equalised for Mick McCarthy's side, but they were unable to find the winner which would have put them back into second place, two points clear of Paul Jewell's Wigan.

Gillingham, who extended their unbeaten run to three games, took advantage of a bright start to take the lead after 14 minutes, when former Sunderland striker Darren Byfield crossed for Henderson to head in.

Their lead lasted only four minutes, however, as George McCartney went on a jinking run down the left before crossing for Brown to turn in the equaliser.

Byfield had been denied an early goal by a combination of Thomas Myhre and Gary Breen and Sean Thornton had a goal disallowed for offside, but there were few chances in a tight match.

Sunderland were let off the hook when Richard Rose, found in space by Matt Jarvis, fired over the bar and Jarvis then sent in a teasing cross which Byfield failed to connect with.
