Goalkeeper makes three penalty saves as Morecambe progress

Goalkeeper Barry Roche was the hero as Morecambe made it through to the Northern area quarter-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 3-1 shoot-out win after a 1-1 draw at Chester. Roche dived the right way to palm away the kicks from Anthony Barry, Kevin Roberts and Paul Taylor, while Dave Artell, Diarmuid O'Carroll and Aaron Taylor all found the net from 12 yards to send Sammy McIlroy's team through. The opening goal arrived after 42 minutes with Roche providing the assist as a long goal kick travelled 60 yards, evading all the Chester defenders and ending up at the feet of Rene Howe who lobbed the ball over the stranded keeper John Danby from just inside the box. Chester pushed for an equaliser in the second half and probably deserved one for all their endeavour. The goal eventually came in the 82nd minute from Kevin Ellison who struck a firm right foot shot into the far corner from 15 yards after some neat approach work from substitute Taylor.
