Real come back to earn point

Real Madrid fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Dynamo Kiev on a freezing night in Ukraine.

Goals from Raul and a Luis Figo penalty earned the Spanish side a crucial point with three teams now tied on seven points in Group B.

Kiev took the lead after just 13 minutes when Nigerian teenager Atanda Yussuf netted thanks to a deflection.

Diogo Rincon was allowed far too much space in the penalty area and he teed up the midfielder whose shot from the edge of the area came off Francisco Pavon and left Iker Casillas helpless.

The home side took a deserved 2-0 lead midway through the first half via Maris Verpakovskis' first UEFA Champions League goal.

The Latvian striker cut inside Michel Salgado and his fierce right-foot shot went through the legs of Ivan Helguera and into the far corner.

But Real, whose only attempts on goal hitherto had been long-range shots from Roberto Carlos, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo, pulled a goal back on 38 through their talismanic skipper.

An astute pass from Figo found the striker who coolly slotted home his 48th Champions League goal with his left foot.

Casillas twice denied Oleh Husyev before Los Galacticos drew level just before half time with a Figo penalty.

Moroccan wing back Badr El Kaddouri lunged in on Ronaldo giving the Greek referee no option but to point to the penalty spot and the Portuguese winger did the rest.

An ineffective Michael Owen was replaced on the hour mark as Real searched for a winner and Figo had their best chances in a scrappy second half, firing straight at home keeper Olexandr Shovkovsky and then seeing the Kiev skipper dive to his left to turn a curling shot around the post.

But Joszef Szabo's men also had their chances, Brazilian Giacomace Kleber firing over when well positioned and the home crowd thought they may have had a penalty of their own when Salgado lunged at Verpakovskis but the claims were waved away and both teams had to settle for a point.
