Stephen Elliott took advantage of a mistake from Watford defender Neil Cox to earn Sunderland a point from a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road.

Watford, looking for their first win in five Championship matches, had made the perfect start when Neal Ardley fired them in front after only nine minutes.

The former Wimbledon midfielder, who was making his 100th appearance for The Hornets, cracked a shot past Mart Poom from 12 yards after Ashley Young's cross had deflected into his path.

However, Sunderland were level just 13 minutes later when Cox inexplicably played a free kick straight to Julio Arca, who sent in Elliott to slot his seventh goal of the season beyond Richard Lee.

Lee kept out a low shot from Marcus Stewart as Sunderland grew in stature after their equaliser and after Elliott had lashed a shot high and wide, Dean Whitehead was unlucky to see a volley drift the wrong side of a post.

Stewart went close again when he placed a shot narrowly wide of Lee's goal, before Watford finished the game in the ascendancy, going close through Bruce Dyer and Ardley.
