Pugh pounces to sink Preston

Danny Pugh proved to be the hero for Leeds as he fired The Whites to a 1-0 win over Preston.

The 78th-minute effort brought an end to a lengthy goal drought for Leeds and catapulted them into the top half of the table.

Leeds last hit the target against Swindon on September 21 and Pugh's close range strike will hopefully restore confidence at Elland Road.

The goal was the highlight of a turgid affair, with chances at a premium.

The match looked all set to end goalless when Brett Ormerod embarked on a run down the left before slipping the ball to Pugh who slotted home from close in.

Preston's best chance fell to Dickson Etuhu at the start of the second half, but his header lacked power, while Eddie Lewis saw a late free kick saved by Neil Sullivan.

David Healy left the field on 75 minutes, with Leeds fans handing the Preston man a rapturous ovation amid suggestions he could make a move across the Pennines next week.
