Friio late show stuns Gills

David Friio scored a late double to give Plymouth a 2-1 victory over Gillingham.

The hosts had appeared set to lose their third home game on the bounce until a frantic final few minutes saw them turn the game on its head.

A Daruis Henderson goal looked to be enough for the visitors, but midfielder Friio had other ideas as he notched two headers in the space of a minute near the final whistle.

The opening half had been one of few real chances as both teams were unwilling to risk too much in pursuit of an opening goal.

Plymouth keeper Romain Larrieu made sure the scores remained deadlocked after 25 minutes as he produced an excellent save to deny Andrew Crofts.

However, neither custodian found themselves busy and the interval came at just the right time with the game going nowhere.

That all changed straight after the re-start as Henderson ran onto a through ball and fired in a left footed drive from a tight angle.

The goal suddenly brought Plymouth to life but, for all their pressure, they seemed likely to suffer defeat until Friio popped up in the dying stages.

The Frenchman scored twice from corners in the final few minutes to leave the Gills in complete shock as they faced up to the prospect of returning to Kent with nothing after they had been on the verge of a fine away victory.
