Macken: Penalty miss

Barnsley moved off the bottom of the Championship, but will regret a Jon Macken penalty miss in their 0-0 draw with Norwich.

Macken's penalty miss ensured the Tykes extended their winless streak to four matches against, but Simon Davey's side will welcome the point at Oakwell.

Striker Macken, who has yet to find the target this season, had the chance to open the scoring in the 12th minute, but his tame spot kick was easily gathered by Norwich goalkeeper David Marshall.

It was a huge setback for the hosts and went some way to extending their barren run in front of goal to over 360 minutes of play.

The impressive Diego Leon and Jamal Campbell-Ryce had good opportunities for the Tykes while Norwich, who took their time to get a foothold in the match, had a few chances of their own through Antoine Sibierski and Lee Croft.

Dream

Barnsley enjoyed a dream start to the match as Leon showed great vision to spot Marshall off his line but the City stopper retreated in time to tip the ball over.

Leon, impressing on his return to the side, went close again soon after when Marshall saved his well-struck volley.

The Tykes continued to dominate possession and it looked to have paid dividends in the 13th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Matthew Pattison handled in the area.

But Macken let the visitors off the hook with a poorly stuck penalty.

It was huge blow for the hosts and a minute later Leon hit the post with a shot from outside the area.

Confidence

Campbell-Ryce was the next player to go close as his shot was cleared off the line before Macken, clearly low on confidence after his penalty miss, dragged a shot wide when one-on-one with Marshall.

After weathering the early storm Norwich began to get a grip of the match and Antoine Sibierski was the first to test Heinz Muller with a solid header which the Reds goalkeeper did very well to get a hand to.

Stephen Foster was almost left red faced when he sent a backpass over the head of Muller, who only just got back to collect it.

At the other end Iain Hume was causing City all sorts of problems and he embarked on a piercing run which was halted only by a last ditch tackle from Jon Otsemobor.

City boss Glenn Roeder, seemingly unimpressed with his side's display, made an attacking change early in the second half with Jamie Cureton replacing Pattison.

Despite creating one good break for the Canaries, the change had little effect as the game petered to a draw.
