Primera Division: Cordoba breeze past Granada 2-0 in vital six-pointer

Cordoba made a mockery of their struggles this season to breeze past Granada in what could prove to be a vital six-pointer at the foot of the Primera Division.

Strikes from Nabil Ghilas and Florin Andone clinched a 2-0 margin for Cordoba at Estadio Nuevo Arcangel, which takes the hosts above their opponents - who have not win since September - and into 18th place.

The win, only Cordoba's second of the season, may not have been enough to take them out of the drop zone but it does lift them to only one point off safety.

Miroslav Djukic's side, who also drew 1-1 with Granada in the Copa del Rey last month, were in need of a boost after suffering a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Barcelona before the winter break.

And it was the hosts who made most of the early running, with Ghilas firing a long-range effort harmlessly over the bar in the fifth minute - although he was merely finding his range and superbly broke the deadlock soon after.

The on-loan Porto striker showed neat feet and quick-thinking to dispatch Patrick Ekeng's fizzed ball across the box past Granada keeper Olazabal Oier for his fifth goal of the season.

Ekeng burst down the right and seemingly put his head down and just decided to put his foot through a hopeful low cross into the area in the 16th minute.

Ghilas might have been surprised as the ball beat a crowd of bodies to reach him eight yards out at the far post, but you would not guess so the way he shifted his balance and drilled home a one-touch finish to give Oier no chance.

Granada huffed and puffed in their attempts to get back in the game and they were dealt a further blow when forward Alfredo had to go off injured.

But things went from bad to worse when Andone doubled Cordoba's lead two minutes before the interval.

This time there was nothing fluky about Federico Cartabia's pinpoint delivery across the six-yard box, as Andone stole a yard off his marker at the far post to tap into an empty net.

Granada continued to toil after the break, but the hosts were given some cause for concern when goalscorer Ghilas had to go off injured after the hour-mark.

Ivan Riki and Javi Marquez both tried their luck with long-range shots for Granada as the clock ran down, but they never looked like scoring and the visitors' three-month winless run goes on.
