Aaron Wilbraham scored twice in four minutes as Bristol City edged past AFC Wimbledon 2-1 to extend their unbeaten run to 18 games. The 35-year-old forward, captain for the evening with Wade Elliott rested, made it 10 for the season with 17 minutes to go from close range to eventually break down a stern Wimbledon resistance. And he sealed their Johnstone's Paint Trophy progression at the end of a rapid counter attack before substitute George Francomb thundered in a late consolation. The visitors, flying high in League Two, more than held their own and threatened for the first time through Adebayo Azeez whose fizzing drive was inches away from finding a way past the sprawling Frank Fielding. The Dons had their goalkeeper James Shea to thank for sending them into the break on level terms as he pulled off a fingertip save to deny Aden Flint after the centre-back headed substitute Luke Freeman's curling free-kick across goal. And Shea did well to dive at the feet of Freeman 10 minutes after the break after the playmaker tried to dance around him inside the box before Jay Emmanuel-Thomas warmed his palms with a stinging effort. The tie's opening goal finally arrived when Emmanuel-Thomas' inviting chip was knocked across goal by Joe Bryan for Wilbraham to move into double figures for the season. Just four minutes later Wilbraham picked up Korey Smith's pass on the right-hand side before firing a low drive into the bottom corner. But the Dons set up a nervy finale when Francomb cracked a long-distance right-footed drive off Fielding's right-hand post and into the back of the net in the 83rd minute.
