Struggling Real Sociedad were denied a morale-boosting win in heartbreaking fashion as they conceded a last-gasp equaliser to draw 1-1 at rock-bottom Cordoba.

Sociedad had looked set to pick up only their second league victory of the season after Inigo Martinez's first-half goal saw them leading heading into the dying moments at the Nuevo Arcangel.

However, with barely three minutes left on the clock, Cordoba striker Xisco turned in the rebound after the ball had come back off the post to salvage a point for the hosts and leave Sociedad stunned.

That equaliser lifted Cordoba up to third-from-bottom, although they are level on five points with Levante and Elche below them, while Sociedad are just one point and one place better off.

Sociedad had picked up only two points from six games since their stunning comeback win over Real Madrid in August but they seemed set to finally be able to celebrate another triumph on Saturday thanks to Martinez's goal.

The Spain international tapped home at the far post in the 22nd minute after Sergio Canales' inswinging free-kick from the right had been flicked on by Carlos Vela.

That was the only incident of note during the first half, and the second half was not a barnstorming affair either, although there was marginally more goalmouth action than before the break.

Gonzalo Castro missed from close range as Sociedad sought to double their lead before Cordoba responded through substitute Xisco, who also contrived to fire wide when presented with a great chance in the 63rd minute.

That miss looked set to cost winless Cordoba dear as the clock ticked down, but Xisco was handed the chance to make amends in the 87th minute when Fede Cartabia's cross came back off the post, and the former Newcastle and Deportivo La Coruna striker made no mistake to bury home the equaliser.
