Two goals from Korey Smith and Wes Burns' effort guided Bristol City into the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 3-1 win at south-west rivals Cheltenham.

Substitute Terry Gornell struck at the other end, but it was too late to deny visiting manager Steve Cotterill the victory against his former club.

Cheltenham created the better of the early chances with City goalkeeper Frankie Fielding pushing Jason Taylor's effort around the post before Byron Harrison fired wide from 15 yards.

Burns netted the opener in the 28th minute, rising above his marker to head in a fine Jay Emmanuel-Thomas cross.

The young striker almost struck again three minutes before the break, only for his shot to be blocked by defender Matt Taylor.

First-half injury time saw Lee Vaughan go close to levelling the scores, but his 20-yard drive was pushed over the crossbar by Fielding.

Smith scored what proved to be the winner in the 56th minute when he collected another inch-perfect pass from Emmanuel-Thomas before placing his shot beyond goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

The Cheltenham goalkeeper did well to deny Burns late on, but was helpless to keep out Smith's second strike - a thundering 25-yard effort six minutes from time.
