Lille missed the chance to go top of Ligue 1 as they were held to a goalless draw by Montpellier.

Three points would have enabled the hosts to leapfrog Bordeaux and Marseille into top spot, but they were left to rue an uninspiring performance in front of goal.

Despite failing to win, Rene Girard's team remain unbeaten this season, just a point off the early pace-setters at the summit of Ligue 1.

The hosts showed good intent from the start and only an alert Geoffrey Jourdren prevented Ryan Mendes from having a clear run on goal.

Lille continued to threaten and Michael Frey's deflected shot from the edge of the area beat Jourdren this time, but squirmed just wide of the post.

Frey continued to impress as he set up Jonathan Delaplace, but the former Zulte Waregem midfielder failed to capitalise as his 12-yard volley was deflected wide of the target by Daniel Congre.

Montpellier had the biggest chance of the game with almost an hour played.

Jonas Martin created the opportunity following some neat play and his pass found Victor Montano in space, but the recovering Marko Basa did just enough to put the visitors' striker off.

That seemed to spring the visitors into life and Siaka Tiene curled an effort wide minutes later after Kevin Berigaud had picked him out.

A goal continued to elude both teams as Ryan Mendes shot straight at Jourdren after playing a one-two with Delaplace.

Montpellier had a late opportunity to steal the points, but Congre could only head over after climbing above David Rozehnal from Tiene's free-kick.
