Freiburg were denied their first win of the season deep in stoppage time for the second time in a matter of days as Jannick Vestergaard salvaged Hoffenheim a Bundesliga point with practically the last kick of the game.

Freiburg were pegged back by a Hertha Berlin equaliser in the seventh minute of stoppage time on Friday night - and that was followed on Tuesday night by further late disappointment.

Christian Streich's men led 3-2 thanks to goals from Mike Frantz (2) and Vladimir Darida, with Tarik Elyounoussi and Sebastian Rudy on target for the hosts.

Defending for their lives following a red card for Darida, they were praying to hear the final whistle - but it came only after Vestergaard struck to maintain Hoffenheim's unbeaten start to the season.

The game came to life in the space of two first-half minutes which put Freiburg in command.

Kevin Volland's backpass was intercepted by Maximilian Philipp, who teed up Frantz to put the visitors in front.

Frantz had only just finished celebrating his goal when he was raising his arms again in celebration of another with a near-post header from Jonathan Schmid's cross beating Oliver Baumann.

Hoffenheim managed to reduce the arrears just before half-time, though, with Elyounoussi dribbling his way past two Freiburg defenders before sending the ball through the legs of Freiburg goalkeeper Roman Burki and in.

It took a little more than 15 minutes of the second half for the home side to level, with Rudy curling his free-kick over the wall and into the unguarded corner of the goal.

Freiburg rolled up their sleeves and responded with a dubious penalty allowing Darida to put them in front again.

There was no doubting Tobias Strobl's foul on Schmid, although contact appeared to have been made outside the area.

Darida then struck Pirmin Schwegler in the face in the 81st minute with his attempted overhead kick. There was no intent and a shake of hands between the pair - but the referee had already brandished the red card to the unfortunate Freiburg forward.

Freiburg got everybody behind the ball to defend their lead, but just like four nights ago, they were unable to go the whole distance.

Burki did all he could to block two goalbound shots on the line, but he was beaten by Vestergaard with what turned out to be the penultimate touch of the game.

As soon as play was restarted, the referee brought the game to an end.
