Fiorentina twice hit the woodwork and missed other goalscoring chances and had to settle for a goalless draw against Sassuolo in Florence on Wednesday.

Juan Cuadrado was denied by the post in the 12th minute and his Viola team-mate Borja Valero also saw his 60th minute attempt bounced off the post.

Fiorentina created 16 other opportunies but could not beat Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli on the night.

Sassuolo went into the game in Tuscany looking for their first win of the campaign but failed to test Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto throughout.

Jasmin Kurtic, whose goal handed Fiorentina their first Serie A win at Atalanta last Sunday, was first to test Consigli in the 11th minute.

The Slovenian drilled a long-range attempt that was punched away by the keeper.

Seconds later, Joaquin fed Cuadrado in the box.

Consigli was beaten but the left-footed shot by Cuadrado crashed off the post.

Before the half-hour mark, Cuadrado got past his marker only for his right-footed effort to be kept out by Consigli.

Fiorentina almost went ahead before half-time when Valero got behind Marcos Alonso's cross, however, his powerful effort went just high.

The Viola, who had already produced 12 chances in the opening half, kept the pressure on when play resumed.

In the 56th minute, Valero's flying header from Cuadrado's cross went wide.

The home fans were left frustrated yet again when Khouma Babacar set up Valero in the box.

The Spaniard managed to get past Consigli yet he saw his shot rebound off the far post.

Fiorentina still could have taken all three points in the dying seconds but Gonzalo Rodriguez wasted a good chance when he headed Kurtic's dangerous cross over the bar.
