Valencia will be aiming to pile on the agony for Villarreal in Sunday's derby to maintain their challenge for a top-four place.

The visitors to El Madrigal are only two points off leaders Barcelona and on the back of a comfortable 3-1 victory over struggling Elche.

Villarreal, meanwhile, have dropped off the pace after losing 2-1 at Sevilla to two last-minute goals.

Villarreal coach Marcelino Garcia Toral told the club's website: "It's a special game and in this kind of game you have to keep a lid on the players' extra motivation because it's a derby.

"We are confident we can win but they are a good team with some great individuals. If we play at a high tempo then we are a tough team for any opponent. Seville was a setback but until the last two minutes when we made a couple of mistakes we had been very strong."

Valencia's last away game was a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Deportivo de La Coruna but that has been their only setback in the Primera Division this season.

Valencia defender Jose Luis Gaya told the club's website: "We want to show that our last away game is forgotten about - a blip. We want to change our dynamic away from home, go for the game and get the three points.

"Villarreal are a side who like to have a lot of the ball. We have to go for it. If we go out there asleep like we did against Deportivo, then they will come for us.

"We've been working very well this week, but Villarreal will be looking for the win and it will be a tough, tight game. However, we have a strong desire to get the three points."
