Bundesliga: Augsburg miss chance to go third after draw with Frankfurt

Augsburg wasted the chance to move up to third in the Bundesliga on Sunday evening as they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ragnar Klavan and Raul Bobadilla put Markus Weinzierl's men in the driving seat, but Stefan Aigner pulled one back on the stroke of half-time.

The Bundesliga's top-scorer Alexander Meier brought the Eagles level midway through the second half and Augsburg could not respond as they had to make do with just a point, leaving them fourth on goal difference behind Schalke.

Results elsewhere this weekend meant Augsburg could rise to their highest league position at such a stage of the season with a win, and they certainly looked hungry.

They took the lead in the seventh minute when Halil Altintop somewhat fortunately diverted the ball into the path of Klavan, who sent his shot through the legs of Kevin Trapp and in.

Trapp then made a good save with his foot from Altintop's effort before racing off his line to get to the ball before Tobias Werner.

Frankfurt had a lot to thank their goalkeeper for as he kept them in the game next with a save from Werner, but he was beaten for the second time in the 37th minute.

Altintop's free-kick was headed on by Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker at the near post and Bobadilla was waiting at the far post to tuck the ball in.

It was all going according to plan for Augsburg, until Aigner pulled a goal back from close range deep in first-half stoppage time after Alexander Manninger had denied Alexander Meier.

It was the worst time to concede, but the best time for Frankfurt to score as it gave them confidence going into a second half which was unlike the first.

Augsburg lacked the energy or ideas to make any impression and Frankfurt started to gain the upper hand, equalising in the 70th minute when Carlos Zambrano's pass picked out Meier, who sent in a low shot for his 14th goal of the season and first in 2015.

Both sides showed signs of tiredness at the end of an intense week as the clock ticked down with no further danger at either end.

Frankfurt thus denied Augsburg the chance of third place alone, holding on to their own ninth place in the Bundesliga, seven points behind sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
