A Nils Petersen hat-trick helped Freiburg come from behind to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 and move off the foot of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Marco Russ gave the visitors the lead in the first minute and their lead did not seem in any danger until Vladimir Darida levelled from the penalty spot after an hour.

Petersen then took centre stage, scoring two goals in five minutes before completing his hat-trick and Freiburg's much-needed third win of the season late on.

The last thing bottom-placed Freiburg would have wanted was to concede an early goal, but that is precisely what they did after just 45 seconds.

A Marc Stendera free-kick beat everybody except Russ at the far post, who stuck out his leg and lifted his shot into the top left-hand corner.

It understandably dented Freiburg's confidence and they were lucky to remain in the game as Frankfurt looked to finish them off in the first half.

Haris Seferovic went closest five minutes before the break, but Roma Burki made a good save to deny him from a tight angle.

Nevertheless, even a one-goal lead looked comfortable for the Eagles, until a controversial penalty offered Freiburg a lifeline in the 61st minute.

Stefan Aigner was adjudged to have fouled Christian Gunter just inside the penalty area, and Darida stepped up to bring the hosts level.

Barely a minute had passed before Petersen completed the turnaround, shooting first time into the bottom right-hand corner from Felix Klaus' cross.

Frankfurt fell apart and Freiburg took full advantage to double their lead five minutes later with Petersen left unmarked at the far post to head in Mike Frantz's cross.

Petersen completed his hat-trick with two minutes left, first seeing his header from Jonathan Schmid's cross blocked on the line, but following through to seal a much-needed win for Freiburg, lifting them out of the bottom three.
