Bundesliga: Points shared between Bayer Leverkusen and Monchengladbach

Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach moved level with Augsburg in third place in the Bundesliga following a 1-1 draw at the BayArena.

Hakan Calhanoglu gave the hosts an 18th-minute lead, but Roel Brouwers levelled for Lucien Favre's men just before half-time.

Despite both sides' endeavours, there was no room for a winner as they shared the spoils to move level on 24 points with Augsburg, who lost 4-0 at home to leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Gladbach opened the game with a good opportunity on the break with Max Kruse sending Patrick Herrmann through, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Leverkusen then enjoyed the better of the contest, creating plenty of chances before taking the lead through Calhanoglu.

The set-piece specialist this time scored with a moving ball, lifting his shot over Yann Sommer from 20 yards out with the ball dipping into the far corner.

Gladbach were appealing for a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area when Emir Spahic bundled Thorgan Hazard over, but the referee waved play on when a red card would also likely have been the result for the Leverkusen defender had the foul been given.

Although furious at that decision, the visitors still found an equaliser before half-time when Brouwers met a corner from the right on the volley to beat Bernd Leno in the bottom right-hand corner.

Gladbach attacked early in the second half with Kruse going close and Brouwers nearly netting again from a corner, somehow contriving to lift the ball over the crossbar from a few yards out.

That proved to be the closest either team came to scoring in the second half, although there were further chances at both ends to take maximum points.

Calhanoglu sent a free-kick over and Brouwers denied Julian Brandt a sight of goal as the defences came out on top to ensure a point each in Leverkusen.
